Master Officer A.P. Draughon III of the Southwest District was presented with the Exchange Club’s “Officer of the Year” award at a ceremony on April 13 at N.C. State University’s McKimmon Center. The Exchange Clubs of Raleigh are local chapters of the National Exchange Club, which is a service organization for men and women of all ages. Each year, Exchange Clubs all over the nation honor members of law enforcement who have provided outstanding service to the community. Draughon was selected to receive the award because of his commitment to serving the residents of the Southwest District, according to Lieutenant J.C. Perry. Draughon, who joined RPD in 2003, was selected as RPD’s PROP officer last September. He has worked since then to educate landlords about the city’s Probationary Rental Occupancy Permit program while helping to solve problems at rental properties. Perry explains that Draughon not only works tirelessly on his PROP-related duties, he also cheerfully takes on many other tasks in the district such as filling in as a school resource officer, working open beats, and assisting with crime prevention initiatives. According to Perry, during a recent rash of residential burglaries in the Cameron Village area, Draughon went door to door on multiple occasions to hand out flyers and speak to residents about burglary prevention. “Officer Draughon’s dedication to the citizens of the Southwest District has been second to none,” said Perry.
