Legislative Update:
June 23, 2006

HB 447 – LEO Creditable Service - Workers’ Compensation (loophole)
Is Two Steps closer to becoming Law

This week in the General Assembly was a great week for PBA’s legislative agenda and efforts by PBA leaders and members.

Your efforts through Capwiz to notify legislators to support HB 447 and additional efforts by PBA leaders who personally traveled to the legislature have paid high dividends.

On Monday evening, June 19, 2006, HB 447 unanimously passed the Senate 46-0 as PBA leaders and members looked on from the Senate Galley. Following the vote, members gathered with Senators to thank them for their support especially Senator Tony Rand (Cumberland and Bladen Co) who was instrumental in getting the bill to the floor.

On Thursday, June 22, 2006, HB 447 was returned to the House for concurrence where the bill unanimously passed again by a vote of 155-0.

HB 447 will now be sent to the Governor to sign into law. NOW is the time to notify Governor Easley and urge him to sign the bill.

Special thanks to those PBA members and leaders who wrote, called and visited legislators over the past few days. Your efforts were essential in dramatically improving the work life of every law enforcement officer in North Carolina who is seriously injured in the line of duty. We also thank Senator Rand for his outstanding efforts. A very special thank to Representatives Rick Glazier and Rick Eddins the bill sponsors who’s persistence over the past four years made this bill happen.
