PBA proudly reports our progress on each of our legislative agenda items.

25 Year Retirement for Law Enforcement Officers
The Senate version of 25 Year Retirement is out of bill drafting and will be introduced very soon by Senator John Snow, with Senators Doug Berger, Richard Stevens, and Don East agreeing to sign on as primary sponsors.

The House version of 25 Year Retirement is in bill drafting.  Representatives Rick Glazier, Tim Moore, Marian McLawhorn, and Mitch Gillespie have agreed to be our primary sponsors.

Due Process for Law Enforcement Officers
PBA submitted modifications from last year’s bill to Representatives Grier Martin and Paul Stam, who have agreed to be our primary bill sponsors.  Representative Martin has forwarded the language modifications to bill drafting.

Local Option – 25 Year Retirement for LEO’s

With the assistance of Senator Jeanne Lucas, the Durham County/City local option 25 Year Retirement is in bill drafting.

Other PBA initiatives to include Due process for deputy sheriffs, Seek Constructive Reform of The N.C. Criminal Justice and Sheriff Standards Commissions (Study Bill), and Change Definition of NC Corrections/Probation Parole Officers to Law Enforcement Officers (N.C.G.S. Chapter 17) are all in language negotiations or in bill drafting. We are very close to all of our bills being in total draft form.

Some of you have already contacted the office with positive feedback regarding our recent media coverage on the 25 year retirement. Thank you for that support.  However, the bills have not yet been introduced. Once the bills are introduced and we have bill numbers, we will notify you immediately with committee assignment information.

PBA’s Legislative Committee is currently developing a database of PBA members who have expressed interest in coming to Raleigh when our bills go before committee.  If you are interested in showing up to support 25 year retirement and other important legislation, please send an e-mail to RBYRD@SSPBA.ORG with the subject line reading “LEGISLATIVE RESPONSE COMMITTEE” Please provide your full name and all of your contact information.

Thank you again for your interest and support.  We will continue to keep you posted.
