Legislative Update: July 2, 2008

The latest PBA legislative update of June 18, 2008 was postponed for two weeks after the defeat of SB 1271, Payroll Deduction/EMS/Firefighters/Law Enforcement. This delay was due to one House committee member’s indication to the Local Government II Committee Chairman that she voted NO when she meant to vote YES.

Since this could change the fate of the bill, House rules allow the bill to be recalendared for the next scheduled committee date, which was Wednesday, June 25, 2008. House rules also require that the bill can only be heard if the member requesting to change their vote brings the bill up before the committee.

The committee meeting for June 25th was cancelled and SB 1271 was recalendared again for Wednesday July 2, 2008.

Unfortunately neither Representative Mary McAllister, who voted NO when she meant YES, nor a second member, Representative Marvin Lucas, who said he also might change his no vote, showed up for the committee meeting. As a result of their absence, SB 1271, per committee rules, was removed from the calendar. The Teamsters, whose interference started the problems with the bill, didn’t show up either. The promised “Teamster Clout” never materialized.

Following is the original legislative update from June 18, 2008.
