Wills for Heroes

The Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association will host a Wills for Heroes program in Raleigh on Saturday, April 18, 2009 on the campus of Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Wills for Heroes provides free essential estate planning documents including wills and powers of attorney to first responders including policemen, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The program will begin with appointments at 10 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m.; final appointments will begin at 4 p.m. First responders from Wake County and the surrounding area who wish to participate are instructed to contact Bennie C. Collins, Wake County EMS Division Chief via telephone at (919) 856-5876 or via email at bennie.collins@co.wake.nc.us. The Wills for Heroes Foundation was established by attorneys Anthony Hayes of South Carolina and Jeff Jacobson of Arizona after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Foundation works to assist first responders across the country in a number of ways, including providing free estate planning documents and other financial assistance programs. The NCBA Young Lawyers Division adopted Wills for Heroes as a public service project in 2007 and has previously held programs in Charlotte, Salisbury, Greensboro, Cary, and Winston-Salem. Volunteer attorneys have prepared thousands of estate planning documents for first responders and their spouses at no charge.
