Telecommunicators
Advance the Process of
Starting Their Own
Statewide Chapter
After months of discussion and planning
a steering committee has been set in
place for the PBA’s first
Telecommunicators Chapter. The formation
of a Telecommunicators Chapter was
originally envisioned by Cary Chapter
Vice-President Rick Thomas. Thomas was
concerned that Telecommunicators aren’t
provided any legal coverage or
legislative lobbying for benefits
enhancement through any association that
they could belong to. Thomas also felt
that if Telecommunicators were presented
the chance to enhance their profession
through an association with a proven
track record of fighting for its
members, that they would welcome the
opportunity to become involved.
Earlier this year, Thomas asked for and
received support both from the Cary
Chapter and the NCPBA to carry the
initiative forward. The NCPBA served as
a sponsor at the 5th annual
Telecommunicators conference held at the
North Carolina Justice Academy April 1st
through April 3rd. Cary Chapter
President and NCPBA Legislative
Chairperson Randy Byrd was given time to
speak during the second day of the
conference on April 2nd. He emphasized
his appreciation for the job that
Telecommunicators perform, along with
highlighting the various benefits that
the PBA offers. This interaction along
with a sponsor table led to numerous
Telecommunicators becoming members
during the conference.
Thomas continued to receive interest
from Telecommunicators who became
members and a steering committee was
formed. The first meeting of the
committee took place at the Courtyard by
Marriott in Burlington, NC on Sunday
July 1st. The committee consists of Rick
Thomas (Committee Chairman) from the
Cary Police Department, Mike Reitz from
Orange County 911 and Tammy Dyles and
Nancy Williams from High Point 911.
John Midgette the NC Division Executive
Director and Lou Ellen Taylor the NC
Division President were also in
attendance for the meeting. They were
able to bring a lot of valuable
information to the table and encouraged
the efforts of the committee.
Committee members will be concentrating
on growing the membership during the
next few months throughout the state.
Telecommunicators are encouraged to
become members and to more importantly
become involved.
