On Saturday, February 27, 2010 Cary chapter
President Randy Byrd presented an appreciation plaque to retiring Sgt.
Gary Hundley. The plaque was presented on behalf of the Cary chapter and
was part of the 4th Annual “George Almond” Officer of the Year awards
banquet at the Embassy Suites in Cary.
In his remarks, Byrd noted Hundley’s contributions as a defensive
tactics instructor and how his efforts have made his fellow officers
some of the safest and most prepared in the country for physical
confrontations. He also highlighted Hundley’s example and dedication to
physical fitness through rigorous exercise and diet. In closing out his
remarks Byrd chose to mention other attributes that set Hundley apart.
According to Byrd, “To know this man is to know someone that is the most
well liked person in the Cary Police department and one of the best
examples for how one should live his life.” Byrd added, “He leads by
example…he leads by friendship…he leads by positive encouragement…He has
impacted each of our lives in a special way and the officers of the Cary
Police department are better people because of Gary’s influence.”
Hundley graduated from NC State University receiving his Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Criminal Justice Studies and Sociology Studies. He also
received a Master of Science Degree from Abilene Christian University in
Biblical Studies and Counseling Services. Hundley served as a Campus
Minister in Greensboro before starting his law enforcement career with
the Greensboro Police Department. He received the Michael G. Winslow
Memorial Award upon graduating from the police academy. This is the top
award given to academy graduates. Hundley served with the Greensboro
Police department for a number of years. During his tenure he was
assigned to investigations as a detective investigating financial crimes
and was also a member of the Special Response Team. He received numerous
awards with the Greensboro Police department for weapons proficiency.
Hundley started with the Cary Police department in 1997. During his time
with the Cary Police department he distinguished himself as a defensive
tactics instructor and as member of the departments Emergency Response
Team. He also was promoted to the rank of Sergeant during his tenure.
