Cary Chapter Member has Impressive

Showing in Adventure Race

Bruce Dale recently competed in the Swamp Fox Adventure race and had an impressive showing. The race is a grueling test of running, navigation, kayaking, mountain biking and special skills and was held March 3, in Charleston, S.C.

Bruce, competing as part of Team Five-O, ended the day with fifth place overall and first place in the three-person team category with a final time of 8 hours, 47 minutes.

In the event, 45 teams were required to complete a 4-mile orienteering course, then moved on to an 8-mile, open-water kayak paddle on the S.C. segment of the Intracoastal Waterway, Dale said. Teams then transitioned to mountain bikes and began navigating a 30-mile course that required teams to locate checkpoints along the route. In the midst of the bike leg, teams were faced with a transition to a second 9-mile long orienteering course on foot, requiring them to locate six checkpoints, many of which required swimming, rope climbs and other unusual skills to obtain. Once all six points were located, racers returned to their bikes to ride on to the finish line.
