The Cary Chapter board recently voted to sponsor an Officer
of the Year Award in honor of retired Detective George
Almond. Almond, a PBA member, was shot in the line
of duty in October of 2001. Almond survived the shooting and
returned to duty as a Detective in juvenile investigations
before retiring in August of 2004. George was born in
Salisbury and attended East Rowan High School. He later
attended Appalachian State University majoring in Criminal
Justice. There he met his wife Pam. They have two children
named Kaley and Emily. George, who worked for the North
Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Cary Police
Department for eleven years, keeps busy by speaking to
church, school, and civic groups about his experience. He is
also involved with volunteer work at his daughter's school.
George will be part of the committee that will set up the
criteria and nominating process for the award. George will
also be the presenter of the annual award. The committee is
chaired by Randall Rhyne. Shawna Geyer is also on the
committee. In the coming weeks they will be announcing the
process for selection for this important award for the
Chapter. |
